Pay attention to the moment

Mindfulness isn’t about being perfectly present and focused at all times. It’s not about moving through life in a happy haze. Mindfulness is about choosing to pay attention to the moment with kindness and curiosity. It is about noticing when your mind has wandered and bringing it back to what is right in front of you.

Unrefined sea salt has many benefits

Use unrefined sea salt, such as Celtic sea salt as it contains around 80 trace minerals which help to balance adrenal gland function, enable the body to naturally detox, raise Ph. levels, improve lipids, lowers blood pressure and insulin levels and prevents muscle aches and cramps.

Polyphenols

Foods high in polyphenols protect against inflammation. The following five are especially rich in polyphenols – red grapes, turmeric, onions, green tea, and Assai berries.

Standing matters

Using a standing desk reduces back pain and discomfort and can boost productivity 50% and improve overall attention and thinking. It also increases calorie usage.

Exercise doesn’t help us lose weight

Coca-cola told the world that weight loss is all to do with exercise (and nothing to do with its sugary drinks) – but they’re wrong. Exercise is good for us, but it won’t help us lose weight, a new study has discovered. Although most of us think we’re sure to lose weight if we go to the gym or do strenuous physical activity, no evidence has ever supported that belief. Instead, weight loss is all to do with the amount – and type – of food we eat, say researchers from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. The researchers – Richard Cooper and Amy Luke – have studied weight loss for years and fully expected to find an association between that and physical activity when they started their review of the literature. But they could find no research showing that to be the case; instead, weight loss is entirely to do with the amount and sort of food we eat. (Int J Epidermiol, 2013; 42: 1831-6)

Counselling as effective as antidepressants

Prescription for antidepressants have doubled over the past decade, raking in billions of dollars for the pharmaceutical industry – but the drugs work only as well as counselling, which is a much cheaper option.

The drugs and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) – often referred to as a ‘talking cure’ – work equally well in fighting major depression. There’s no difference in outcomes whether the patient is given an antidepressant or has counselling, say researchers from the University of North Carolina.
They looked at 11 previously published studies that had explored the use of second-generation antidepressants – mainly SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) – with or without the use of CBT in 1,511 patients suffering from major depression.
Although each was as effective as the other, neither approach was very effective, and a similar number of patients discontinued treatment, whether with the drugs –usually because of the side effects – or the talking therapy. (BMU, 2015; 351:h6019)
