A Practical Approach To Mastering Breathing

Presenter: Kieran Macphail

Join Kieran, a physiotherapist and exercise specialist, for this informative and practical approach to mastering breathing mechanics.

Using case studies and practical exercises alongside informative lectures, Kieran will teach attendees to assess clients’ breathing mechanics, as well as a range of treatment protocols to help improve breathing techniques. During the one-day workshop practitioners will:

• Become competent in assessing breathing mechanics subjectively and objectively;

• Be able to use the reflex locomotion principles of Voijta to stimulate ideal breathing mechanics;

• Be able to treat breathing problems through active techniques;

• Be able to incorporate breathing mechanics into exercise and treatment techniques;

• Understand the three roles of the diaphragm;

• Have an awareness of the current literature on breathing mechanics and musculoskeletal symptoms;

• Understand the relationship between breathing, pH and minerals;

• Understand the interactions between blood sugar and breathing.

COURSE INFORMATION

Kieran uses real life case studies to bring the key concepts of breathing mechanics alive in a practical and memorable way.

He also uses case studies to explain more complex principles, such as the roles of the diaphragm, pH and mineral balance, blood sugar and breathing.

Course attendees will look at subjective and objective breathing assessment techniques that can be incorporated into their current assessment routines.
These techniques are designed so that they can be done as part of a treatment or training session so practitioners don’t need disrupt current treatment protocols.

Different treatments will be introduced with a variety of case studies showing the practical benefits of optimal breathing mechanics and how and when to use them.

The current research literature and physiology will be discussed during the workshop so practitioners can explain the reasoning to their patients and other healthcare practitioners. In addition, the current evidence for breathing mechanics in exercise and therapy will be reviewed.

Attendees will be taught a variety of breathing techniques, from simple queuing techniques to ways to strengthen weak links. This includes reflex locomotion techniques to stimulate optimal breathing mechanics.

Specific manual therapies for breathing muscles will be also covered. By the end of the course practitioners will have mastered breathing techniques for gastro oesophageal reflux disease and understand the rationale.
