Know your numbers

If you don’t have a signal on your mobile, you can still call the emergency services. Dial 112 and know what features your phone has for emergency dialing. Remember, even if your network doesn’t have a signal, other peoples’ might, so ask around.

Act F.A.S.T.

A stroke can change or destroy a life but do you know what to look for? Use the F.A.S.T technique. Remember:
Face – has one side fallen, can the patient smile?
Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?
Speech – is their speech slurred?
Time – if you notice any of these signs, time is of the essence, call 999 for help

Kit check

It’s easy to think that it’s someone else’s job to check the first aid kit. Don’t fall into this trap, even if it’s not your job, take a few seconds to have a look, it is no good discovering that you are missing essential items in an emergency. Check it regularly, keep it tidy and always re-stock after an incident.

Think first

In the heat of a first aid emergency, all you want to do is rush in and help. Instead, practiced first aiders will take a moment to stop and think before rushing in. Look at the wider picture and make informed choices.

Silent killer

There are many silent killers in the first aid world. When dealing with a first aid incident keep any eye out for the silent casualty conditions like shock, which can kill.

It could be you

All too often we hear people say: “I don’t need to know first aid because we already have a first aider at work.” But in fact you are more likely to use first aid on friends and family rather than at work. It could be you that saves a life, are you prepared?
